Western Governor’s University

Western Governors offers a great balance of being a reputable school and yet still offering a relatively low cost program. As you compare other reputable online programs to Western Governor’s University, you’ll find they cost less than most. Of course there are still cheaper online degree programs out there, but as was mentioned earlier you run a much higher risk of ending up with the degree full of worthless or useless credits. A nice feature about Western Governor’s University is you pay by the semester and then you can take as many courses as you like during that time. You can think of it as being similar to an all-you-can-eat food buffet. If you go to an all-you-can-eat restaurant, you pay one price and can eat as much food as you like for the time you’re at that restaurant. Similarly, Western University charges one rate for their semester and you can take as many courses as you can handle during that time.

This is definitely an advantage for someone who has a lot of time on their hands. For example, if someone is not working or if they don’t have any major family responsibilities then they are able to devote a lot of time to school. Hypothetically, what might take someone two years to accomplish at a traditional university, you would be able to complete in one year or even less.

Probably the biggest disadvantage to Western Governor’s University is that there is not much handholding. It is really up to you to take control of your education and be able to figure out what you need to do and when you need to do it. There are people to help work with you and guide you but it is definitely not the same level of attention or support that you may receive at other universities. If you’re pretty good at figuring things out on your own and don’t need a lot of additional support then this shouldn’t pose any problem.

Brandman University’s Online Program

Brandon University is part of the Chapman University system which is based in California. Brandon University has both a multitude of ground campuses and a fully functional online program. to be admitted into Brandman University’s undergraduate program you will need to have at least 12 transferable credits and above a 2.0 GPA. As long as you have these two things it shouldn’t be any problem been admitted into their program. Their online graduate program has different requirements depending on which program you’re interested in.  For example, to be admitted into their online MBA program you will need to have completed your bachelors degree program and ideally have above a 3.0 GPA for your most recent credit hours.  Other graduate programs they offer may require additional items such as letters of recommendation.

Brandon University has both a part-time and full-time option. As a part-time student you’re attending class once a week and as a full-time student you are attending class twice a week. Each class is five hours long and can be completed at a time that is most convenient for you. So if you are a full-time student you would be attending two different classes each week for a total of 5 hours per class or 10 hours per week total.  because Brandon University caters towards working adults, their entire program is based on an accelerated format. This means that as a full-time student you would be completing 36 credits for units per year. In a traditional school or university you would most likely be completing 30 credits for units per year as a full-time student.

However, some students are able to move even faster through the program by taking additional classes each session.  Brandon University has eight  week-long sessions.  they have six of these sessions each year. Instead of just taking two classes per session as a full-time student, some students will take three or even four classes per session. Hypothetically, let’s say you have the time to take four classes per session. This would mean you are completing 72 credits or units per year. An Associates degree normally takes about 60 credits or units to complete.

A bachelors degree normally takes around 120 to 124 credits to complete.  if you are attending a typical university or college you can expect it to take two years to complete an Associates degree or four years to complete your bachelor’s degree. As an example that, if you are taking four classes per session at Brandon University then you could complete your associates degree in approximately 5 sessions or 10 months and year bachelors degree could be completed in approximately 10 sessions or one year and eight months. If you have the time to dedicate to school, Brandon University’s online degree program is one of the fastest online degree programs around.

The biggest downside to Brandon University’s online degree program is the cost. Brandon University is a top-tier private education. Their tuition cost is $570 per credit or per unit (for their online program).  This means your cost for 60 credits is about $34,000 or a little over $68,000 for 120 credits.

 

It’s gotten to the point that most people aren’t surprised anymore to learn that most of the stories they absorbed in school about national and world history are, well, less than totally accurate. It would be interesting if the popularity of these myths had something to do with an international conspiracy, but life is not a Jerry Bruckheimer movie, and if these stories have trumped the truth, it’s because they’re just better stories. Misleading, misguided, and misinformed, yeah, but at least they’ve been entertaining. Here are a few things you need to un-learn:

1.  Nero fiddled while Rome burned:

Nero was indeed the emperor of Rome during the Great Fire of 64 A.D., but that’s pretty much where the legend and the truth part ways. Fiddles weren’t even invented for another thousand years, so the instrument in question was likely a lyre. But that’s just a technicality. The bigger issue is that some accounts don’t even place Nero in Rome during the fire but in Antium, and modern scholars feel confident that this was the case.

The story sprang up and became a legend as a way to implicate Nero in the fire and turn him into a scapegoat, with critics saying that Nero arranged for the fire to clear space for a palace expansion, but the fire started in a different location. What’s more, Nero’s own palace was damaged in the fire, which would seem to run counter to his desire to improve his buildings. It’s an intriguing theory, but not a very plausible one.

2.  George Washington had wooden teeth:

George Washington is understandably the focus of quite a few historical myths, like coming clean about chopping down that cherry tree. This lie is, like many, related to the truth. Washington did have terrible teeth, losing his first adult tooth at age 22.

By the time he became president, he only had one real tooth left, probably caused by the use of mercury oxide to treat illness. As a result, he had several sets of false teeth made of varying materials, including hippo and elephant ivory with real teeth from humans and horses. That actually sounds pretty disgusting, all things considered, and not that much better than wood, but he never had a set of wooden chompers. Don’t believe the hype.

3.  Lady Godiva rode naked through town:

Godiva was an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman remembered for riding naked on her horse through town to protest the taxes her husband was levying against his tenants. It’s easy to see the appeal of the myth: rebellion, power, naked women. The problem is that the story seems to have been created years after the possible journey. Rather than being the seed of a story grown wild with time, the entire affair was cooked up almost a century after her death in 1080. Without original or reliable sources, the story’s just that: a tale concocted to pass the time.

4.  Christopher Columbus thought the Earth was flat:

Everyone knows that in 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain to prove that the Earth was round. Except, he didn’t. By the time he made his voyage, the planet’s globe shape was accepted as fact by pretty much every learned and powerful member of society.

The truth was that Columbus thought the world was round, just a whole lot smaller than it turned out to be, and he figured it wouldn’t take long to sail around the edge and wind up in the Asia. The fake version of the story started spreading with the publication of Washington Irving’s best-seller A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, which took no small amount of liberties with the truth. The author constructed the story to fit his needs, the story became a hit, and teachers started conflating facts with publicity.

5.  The 1929 market crash sent brokers leaping to their deaths:

Immediately following the Wall Street crash of October 1929, stories began to spread about distraught businessmen, bankers, and investors killing themselves by jumping out of office windows, unable to deal with the stress and terror of the crash. Yet those stories are urban legends ginned up in the wake of the crash and nothing more. Did people commit suicide in the fall of 1929? Yes.

But of the 100 instances recorded in The New York Times, only four were tied to the crash, and only two happened on Wall Street. The rumors began to gather steam thanks to the gallows humor many comedians at the time were using to talk about the crash, most notably Will Rogers in his joke that so many people wanted to jump to their doom that “you had to stand in line to get a window to jump out of.” The deaths weren’t an epidemic, merely two dark instances that provided enough fuel for decades of rumors.

6.  Women burned their bras in feminist protest:

After a while, you start to see a pattern with these myths: they’re usually based on true happenings, and they tend to combine separate events into one massive one. That’s what happened with the stories of women in the 1960s burning their bras as a sign of protest against older patriarchal norms and a desire to embrace equality and progress. It’s a powerful image, but totally fake.

There aren’t any documented accounts of bra-burning as the movement gained traction, merely anecdotal tales that are hard to corroborate or seem born of a desire to imitate the earlier (and fictional) protests. The most likely explanation is that members of the media saw two things happen at different or even concurrent events: women throwing their bras into trash cans, and men burning draft cards in similar bins. Easy mistake to make, impossible myth to correct.

7.  People thought The War of the Worlds was real:

Before his film career, Orson Welles became a household name for directing and narrating a radio adaptation of H.G. Wells’The War of the Worlds in October 1938. The program was inventive for the way it played with the nature of reality and programming itself, presenting the fictional narrative of an alien invasion with a mix of straight-ahead, newsy reporting.

Pop culture legend has it that many listeners, if not most, mistook the program for a real bulletin and prepared for an invasion by arming themselves, stocking up food, and alerting neighbors. Yet this story is almost assuredly a media creation itself, drummed up to make the broadcast sound more revolutionary and Welles sound even more brilliant. Many news stories reported at the time about people’s fears and even heart attacks over the event were found to be baseless. Nevertheless, the myths became legend, which soon became fact.

8.  Paul Revere made a famous midnight ride:

Here’s another case where a popular author took history and gave it a shine. Paul Revere was indeed a player in the American Revolution, and he was one of several messengers helping to arrange resistance to British forces. But he wasn’t considered a hero until 1861, when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the poem “Paul Revere’s Ride,” which manufactured events out of thin air and turned Revere into a Revolutionary War legend.

His poem contradicts recorded facts at every turn, from the length of Revere’s ride to his purpose and success. (The real Revere was one of many messengers, and he didn’t make it far without being captured.) If you’re looking for a heroic rider who helped alert the colonists to war, ignore Revere. The man you want is Israel Bissell.

9.  Isaac Newton was hit by an apple:

Many aspects of the story of Isaac Newton are fuzzily recreated for students, most notably the idea that he was hit on the head by an apple falling from a tree, an event that spurred him to study and theorize about gravity. He was actually likely never hit in the head, and the apple story didn’t even appear in print until an essay by Voltaire written the year Newton died. Even more important: the issue of gravity wasn’t in doubt, but whether gravity as a force extended far enough from the Earth to be responsible for the position of the Moon. Newton’s life story is a fascinating one, it just doesn’t get told a lot.

10.  Napoleon was tiny:

Despite being emperor of France and one of the most renowned generals in history, Napoleon Bonaparte is remembered as a laughably tiny man, nicknamed “la petit caporal.” He’s even the inspiration for the Napoleon Complex, the inferiority complex described by psychologist Alfred Adler in which shorter people become overly aggressive to compensate for their lack of height. And thanks to a famous paintingby Jacques-Louis David, people think he always had his hand stuffed into his coat.

He’s remembered and portrayed as a tiny, petulant guy, but in reality his stature was totally normal. He was portrayed in the British press as being small, and the image stuck thanks to the discrepancy between French and British inches. His height was about 1.7 meters, though, making him 5 feet 7 inches tall, a completely average height for his era and today. It’s a myth that’s almost impossible to shake from our collective subconscious at this point, even though it’s radically inaccurate.

A General Studies Degree is a popular choice for many seeking an undergraduate degree program.  If you’re wondering what a General Studies Degree is, where to get one or what the benefits are to having one then you’ve come to the right place!  I will break these topics up so feel free to skip ahead to the sections that are most relevant to what you need to know.

What is a General Studies Degree?

A General Studies Degree is often considered a gateway degree.  Sometimes people refer to it as a “generalist degree” or even “associates degree.”  More commonly when someone says they have a General Studies Degree it refers to the fact that they accomplished an associates degree of the first two years towards an undergraduate degree program.

The idea behind a General Studies Degree is that you’re taking a variety of classes to get a better idea of what type of career you might be interested in.  It also serves to give you a lot of different skills to develop.  The idea being that no matter what direction you go career or education wise, you have some background at least through courses taken in your General Studies Program.

What Are the Benefits to a General Studies Program?

A general studies focus is a great place to start if you don’t know what you want to do career or degree wise.  It will expose you to a variety of subjects and give you a chance to see what things interest you the most.  For example, I know people who after taking a few Psychology classes realized that they wanted to go into the field of counseling.

General Studies is a great place to start as a new student because the classes in a general studies program and usually filled with required classes that most people have to take anyways.  So it’s a good idea to get them out of the way during the first two years of an undergraduate program so that you can focus on your core major courses for the last two years.

Is a General Studies Undergraduate Degree a Good Choice?

While a General Studies program is a great idea for an Associates Degree, I wouldn’t recommend it in most cases as a good choice for a Bachelor’s
Sometimes the argument is made that a General Studies Degree is a good option if you’re going to pursue a Graduate Program.  But I would argue that it’s better to choose a BA program that relates to your MA program.

For instance, if you are thinking of getting an MBA then you should probably consider a Degree in Business.  Likewise, if you’re interested in family counseling and want to eventually get into an MFT Program (Marriage Family Therapy) then a BA in Psychology would be a good choice.Degree.  For most employers, seeing that you have a Undergraduate Degree  in General Studies seems like you don’t know what you want to do or you just wanted to find an easy program to get a BA in.  In most cases it would be far better to bet something like a Business Degree or Liberal Studies Degree.

However, if you’re going into a field like sales where a lot of times they don’t care about what degree you have if they care at all then a General Studies Undergraduate Degree could be fine.  But even in fields where they don’t care about what kind of degree you have, it would usually be better to find a degree that relates more specifically to your career of interest.  In other words, if you are interested in Marketing get a Business Degree (not a General Studies Degree).

How to Utilize a General Studies Degree

In most cases, I think the best approach to a General Studies Degree is for your Associates Degree (typically a 2-year program).  Then after you have an Associated Degree in General Studies you can focus on a Bachelor’s Degree that is more specific (ie. Business, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Liberal Studies, etc.)

Where Can You Get a General Studies Degree?

You local Community College is an excellent place to get an Associates in General Studies.  You’ll be getting a price that’s MUCH more affordable than a traditional university and WAY more affordable than a private school.   Just BE SURE to check the schools accreditation.  In fact, what I would do is contact the school that you would like to get your Bachelor’s Degree from and see if they accept credits from the Community College you’re considering.

Also, be sure to check credit transfer-ability with your state college.  So if you’re in Oregon, that would be Oregon State University or University of Oregon.  If your state schools accept credits from the community college you’re looking at then you should be in pretty good shape.

Another good option for getting a General Studies Associates Degree is to look at an online program.  The benefit to this kind of program is convenience.  The thing people generally have the hardest time with an online program is being accountable to do the work that needs to be done.  Having a class to physically show up for offers more accountability.

When your class learning is all virtual and done online it’s easier to skip a class or put off doing the learning.  Also some people have a harder time learning in a virtual environment than they do sitting in a classroom listening to a real person.

Just as with a ground campus you’ll want to check the accreditation of any online program you’re considering.  And if you’re looking at an online program that’s out of state or that doesn’t have a ground campus it’s attached to it’s even more important that you take the time to research that.  Follow the same process as I mentioned earlier, where you call a few school (including in state schools) you’re thinking of transferring to, to complete your Undergraduate Degree and make sure everything transfers ok.

You’ll be spending a fair amount of time and money to taking the hour or two to cover yourself is well worth it!

What Is a Sociology Degree?

Generally speaking, a Sociology Degree is about the bigger picture.  Social science is about integrating psychology, history, economics, and political science and viewing the world through multiple fields of study rather than through just one.  So if you’re a Sociologist you could be involved in business (studying how organizations work), politics (studying the effects of law and social movements), or figuring out things like how to create equal opportunities for everyone.

What Can You Do with a Sociology Degree?

A Sociology Degree can give you a lot of options.  It can be a great base to build upon if you’re thinking of going into a graduate program such as for law, business, education, social work, psychology, counseling or health.

Meaning, you could get an undergraduate degree in Sociology and then go on to pursue something like an MBA or Masters in Psychology.  It’s common for someone who graduates with a Sociology degree to go onto medical school or law school.

Even if you’re not planning on graduate school anytime soon, I Sociology Degree will still provide value.  There are a lot of entry level jobs you could apply for in fields such as sales, social work, education, human resources, administration, and work with non-profits.

What Kind of Careers Can You Get with a Sociology Degree?

Of course, this is the big question.  If you’re going to spend all this time and money on a Sociology Degree will it be worth it?  Will be you be able to make more money and get a better career then if you didn’t have one?  Honestly, it depends on what you’re thinking of doing.

Should You Get a Sociology Degree?

I think it really depends on the person.  For instance, if you’re in a situation where you don’t really care what kind of degree you get but you just want a degree that’s fairly easy and will have a wide variety of application then this degree might be a good option.  But a Business degree would also be a good consideration.

I would say it comes down to what you’re more interested in.  If you gravitate more towards concepts related to people and communities and what impacts the two then Sociology is probably the better choice.  If you’re drawn more towards concepts like making money, finance, organization, sales or marketing then a business degree would probably be better.  If you’re just looking for the degree that will be the easiest between the two then Sociology is generally easier for most.  Business degrees include more math and financial concepts which generally speaking are trickier to learn.

Also, think about what kind of career you want to go into.  For instance, if you’re interested in working at a non-profit it may be less about what your degree is and more about who you know there at the organization.  If they like you and you have the skill sets they need you may be fine without a degree.

You will want to factor in the cost of your education.  If you’re looking at a 4 year program that will cost you $40,000 for your education and living expenses that may or may not be worth it.  On average, someone with a Sociology Degree will probably earn around $30,000 a year.  The reality is that many of the position you are eligible for with a Sociology Degree you could also apply for with just an Associates Degree.

Basically, I want you to be careful about spending a bunch of money on something that may not be a great return on investment.

As an example, lets say you get your Associates Degree for $10,000, then you go get a job that pays you $30,000 year.  Let’s say you’re able to save $10,000 year each year while working.  So in 4 years time (the time it would take to get a Bachelor’s Degree) you would have completed your Associated Degree, paid off the cost of the program (after your first year of working) and then saved an additional $10,000 by the end of the fourth year.  By the end of the fourth year you would also have 2 years of experience under your belt and be possibly eligible for a small promotion or to apply for a different position with a different company that could be a step up.

In our second scenario, let’s say you attend a 4-year school to get your Sociology Degree.  You’ve spend $40,000 and now are ready to go look for work.  Let’s say you start with a $30,000 job as well.  Let’s say you’re able to do the same thing and save $10,000 a year.  So now after 8 years you will have your schooling paid off as opposed to the other scenario where after 4 years you have school paid off and $10,000 in the bank.

Now scenario number two may actually be the better step if you know you want to go onto graduate school.  Or if you know you want to apply for a job that requires a Bachelor’s Degree (some do).  But as you can see, the two scenarios paint a different picture.  Basically, I want you to take the time and think about what you want to do.  A lot of people go the route of scenario two because of pressure from society of parents and the reality is they would be better off with scenario one.

If you’re not sure if a Sociology Degree is important for what you want to do I would call a handful of places that hire for what you’re looking to do. Ask them what kind of degree they look for (if any).  Find out what’s important to them as they will be the ones doing the hiring and ultimately their opinion is what truly matters.
